Assessments
Be more responsive to students' literacy and learning.
CARI
Content-Area Reading Inventory
"[CARI ] is a tool that assess students' reading thinking, and study processes with content texts that the teacher plans to use" (Brozo).
The steps to CARI are simple: Identify the essential skills students need to comprehend their math textbook. Select a typical excerpt from the book. Design questions that will assess students abilities. Key areas to concentrate on are using the book parts (such as headings, glossaries), understanding visual information, understanding content vocabulary, determining key ideas, and creating study aids.

Cloze Inventory
Cloze inventories assess students' current level of understanding of context and vocabulary in their text. In a Cloze inventory, teachers remove every 5-7 word from a passage students are going to read. Students are then given 20-30 minutes to read the text and fill in the words.
